Abstract:

In 1909, H. Weyl proved that each self-adjoint operator on an infinite dimensional complex Hilbert space H is the sum of a diagonal operator and a compact one. In 1935, von Neumann improved the result by showing that the compact operator can be chosen with arbitrarily small Hilbert-Schmidt norm. This result is the remarkable Weyl-von Neumann Theorem. In this talk, I would like to discuss a noncommuatative version of this theorem.
